2009 Suzuki VStrom DL650

I am not going to jump in the arguing game over whether the VStrom or any other motorcycle is an “Adventure Motorcycle”. There have been strong debates on the ADVrider and Stromtrooper forums as to which bikes are worthy of carrying that moniker. I have a Harley Davidson Softail Custom that shares the garage with my Strom and if I were to put a set of knobby tires on it and take it down a dirt road would you deny the fact that it did some adventure riding?

If I was able to purchase the bike I really wanted I would have a BMW f800GS in the garage. Unfortunately, the purchase price of even a used BMW is out of my range and over time the Suzuki has got to wind up as the cheaper motorcycle to own give parts and service prices. But I do have to say that I enjoy riding the VStrom. It is a very smooth running motorcycle and it has plenty of power for me. I do understand that it has limitations where off road riding is concerned but an old, fat boy like me does not really want much more than some action on the fire roads and gravel roads. I don’t want to see single track so the Strom seems to fit my desired “off road” riding needs. I also want to do some mileage as well and the smooth operation and comfortable seating position are big pluses.

I bought this bike from a gentleman in Charlotte, NC in February 2013. It was already decked out with the Jesse luggage, Bestem top box, and even had an extra seat. Not just any extra seat mind you but a Russell Day Long. I already have parted with the seat and made some of my money back on the purchase of the bike. I would have loved to have kept it but I could not even touch the ground with that seat on! The money I made off of it did not last long though as I have spent it and way more on farkles. Isn’t the farkle fest half the fun of owning a motorcycle?

Feel free to tell me what your motorcycle is and your latest farkle you bought. Maybe there is something out there I do not know about yet and I could put it on my list. Beware though, my wife might hate you.

Ride Safe
Steve
